Changing Your Brain with Dr. Daniel Amen

What an incredibly informative call I had last night with Dr. Daniel Amen.

Dr. Amen told us a little about SPECT imagery which “helps his clinic understand if an underlying head injury or toxic exposure may be contributing to their patients’ problems.” Dr. Amen talked about the areas in our brain that work well, and the areas that have decreased or increased activity. If our brains are working too hard, we need to calm them, and if they’re not working hard enough, we need to stimulate them.

When your brain works right, you work right.

He then gave us the simplified versions of the different areas of our brains…

  • Prefrontal Cortex: Responsible for forethought, judgment, planning (decreased activity: impulsive or distracted)
  • Cingulate Gyrus: Is the brain’s gear shifter; it keeps us flexible and going with the flow. (decreased activity: argumentative, selfish, oppositional, inflexible)
  • Deep Limbic: The movement part of the brain; makes us feel connected. (decreased activity: sad, disconnected)

Change Your Brain, Change Your Body actually came from a 12-week home study course that he offered where participants told him of the significant losses in weight they were experiencing. He then realized there was more to changing your brain than he thought.

Dr. Amen’s always been interested in optimizing the brain and, ultimately, a person’s well-being, and he then told us about the 5 different problems in our brains that contribute to how we will or will not lose weight. He also told us a bit about which supplements can help regulate our brains.

  • Compulsive Overeaters: Symptoms are overfocused on food, worrying, having trouble letting go of hurts; Supplements: 5-HTP, St. John’s Wort, inositol
  • Impulsive Overeaters:Symptoms are impulsivity, boredom, easily distracted; Supplements:Green tea, rhodiola, ashwagandha
  • Compulsive/Impulsive Overeaters: Symptoms are a combination of 1 & 2; Supplements: 5-HTP, Green tea and rhodiola
  • SAD Overeaters:Symptoms are sadness or depression, gets winter blues, has carbohydrate cravings, loses interest, sleeps a lot, has low energy; Supplements: SAMe, Vitamin D or DHEA, if needed
  • Anxious Overeaters: Symptoms are anxiety, tension, nervousness, predicts the worst, eats to calm; Supplements: GABA, B6, Magnesium

Dr. Amen said when we know our brain type, we get the treatment that is right for us, and based on 10s of 1000s of scans, he created a questionnaire to help those who don’t live near a clinic or have the money for a scan to identify their brain type. Medicine or supplementation can be lifelong for some while others, through training, can learn to function with minimal assistance.
