Women struggle with what we want from men, and Alison encouraged us to consider, without judgment, “What if no one was misbehaving?” What so many women don’t consciously realize is that when we’re in a relationship with a man, and we’re not getting what we need, moving on to another man won’t necessarily fix ‘the problem’.

Women tend to be attracted to men who have the same energy, and we’re often left wondering why things don’t work out. It’s the distinctions between what attracts us to them in the first place, and these distinctions correlate with the stages men go through in life. What women do once we’ve “landed the guy” is we spend energy trying to get something from them that they are unable to provide.

Men have a different relationship to women’s needs, and how they respond is based solely on honor. Men will help us only when they know that they are capable of doing so. Their ability will be affected by their current stage of development. When women keep asking for something, we don’t realize that asking for what we can’t get is painful for men because they can’t help us. Unfortunately, men will eventually leave… feeling as if they weren’t enough.

Alison shared the Stages of Development…

• The Knight is a man whose primary focus is on adventure, challenge, and conquest. During this stage, a man will be testing himself and his abilities to handle life by being in the thick of things. He may choose to “settle down” during this stage only if he sees marriage as an adventure.
• The Prince is a man whose primary focus is on building. He’s determining what to build and where to build it. During this stage, a man will spend a lot of time working on what he’s building (where his energy/focus is). A woman can choose to work and support a man during this stage, or risk not seeing him at all. If a man cannot build, he will be left unfulfilled.
• The King is a man whose primary focus is on becoming, having arrived, and providing what he’s built and collected during his lifetime to another. Adventure may not be a strong suit during this stage, and a man will tend to offer a lot of advice. The man will provide his knowledge and wisdom.

Most of us are familiar with the “midlife crisis” that men go through, but what we don’t know is that this isn’t a crisis at all. Men are actually entering a tunnel between being a Prince and becoming a King. In this tunnel, men will question everything about where they’ve been, and where they’re going. And what women will do is push them away because of fear that men are somehow holding something back from them. When women push, men will feel unsafe and unsupported.

What women and men can do for themselves is to be truthful and upfront with what they need which will allow them to move into more honorable ways to communicate with one another. When we choose to honor the other, relationships can be transformed in profound ways.
